Chiesa Parrochiale San Vitale

The Parish Church of Saint Vitalis

The parish church of Saint Vitalis is a neoclassical building, with a wide, high nave and imposing transept, enriched by majestic columns which reach up to its dome. The rough facade covered with stone slabs, which has a purely scenographic role, has a Christ the Good Shepherd in the lunette above the portal, created by the Spilimbergo Mosaic School (1954) using the design of Fred Pittino.

Inside, there is the more important, marble altar with an exquisite tabernacle from the 18th century, and statues of the Saints Gervasius and Protasius on the sides; On the antependium there is a bas-relief depicting Eucharist and cherubim.

Of the four side altars, the two in the nave are identical and belong to a Friulian altarist from between the Seventh and the Nineteenth Centuries: On the one on the left, dedicated to the Madonna of the Rosary, the antependium has a bas-relief in marble in poor condition entitled Mysteries of the Rosary, painted in the Fifteenth century, with Saint Gerolamo in the desert; On the one on the right, we find a recent statue of St. Anthony. The Via Crucis, in the wooden bas-relief, seems to be the work of sculptor Giovanni Costantini of the Twentieth century.

Nacchini Organ: the most valuable piece is the majestic organ in the entrance wall; It was built in 1750 by Pietro Nacchini of Dalmatia (born in 1694) for the church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Udine, and arrived in Muzzana after the Napoleonic suppression. It is one of the most important organs preserved in Friuli, still applauded by the experts for its extraordinary voice and the perfection of its sound. Above the keyboard, you can read an invaluable inscription on how to combine the ranges, suggested by Nacchini himself.

The bell tower, which is adjacent to the church, has a beautiful cone-shaped covering which gives it a touch of antiquity.
